Las Vegas, once known for its adult-oriented entertainment, is now emerging as a top family destination with a host of innovative and interactive experiences. The ARTE Museum's Live Sketchbook, where visitors can animate their drawings, is just one example of the new era of child-friendly attractions that also captivate adults.
These attractions often leverage technology and interactivity, making them appealing to the younger demographic. The city has seen a resurgence in family-friendly offerings, including live sports events and a reinvestment in classic attractions, making Las Vegas a more inclusive destination.
Data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority indicates a significant increase in family visits, with 16% of 2023's visitors including someone under 21, a threefold increase from pre-pandemic levels. Steve Hill, CEO of the marketing organization, notes that the city's evolution into a family-friendly destination is part of Las Vegas's ongoing adaptation to meet the needs of a broader audience.
The current wave of family-friendly attractions, dubbed "Family-Friendly Vegas 2.0," builds on the city's history of adapting to attract a wider range of visitors. The 1990s saw a focus on family-oriented themes and attractions, but a shift back to adult entertainment led to a decline in family-centric offerings. However, the introduction of professional sports teams like the Las Vegas Golden Knights and the Las Vegas Aces, along with the Las Vegas Raiders, has reignited the demand for all-ages attractions.
Technology plays a central role in many of these new attractions, such as the Electric Playhouse's motion sensor games and the Flyover ride's immersive film experience. The Sphere, a $2.3-billion venue, hosts concerts and the "Postcard from Earth" movie, offering an interactive lobby experience.
AREA 15's variety of experiences, including axe-throwing and the Haley's Comet ride, cater to a wide age range, while escape rooms and mini-golf courses provide additional entertainment options. Classic attractions like the High Roller observation wheel and the Mandalay Bay pool complex continue to be popular among families.
The city's commitment to family-friendly experiences is set to continue with upcoming attractions like Universal Horror Unleashed and the potential for a new baseball stadium, indicating that Las Vegas is embracing a future where family fun is as integral as its iconic nightlife.
